British Broadens Methanol Poisoning Warning Roster with An additional 11 Destinations
The UK government has placed eleven more countries to its travel alert list regarding the threats of industrial alcohol toxicity from tainted spirits.
The updated travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "an international surge in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Only last month, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after several high-profile incidents like the tragic death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being cautions that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hours.
What is Methanol and In what way is it Used?
Methanol is a poisonous substance often used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for ingestion.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.
However in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to detect.
Government Recommendations for Tourists
Authorities representative Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should recognize the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, opt for trusted places and avoid homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer warned.
"Should anything feels off, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – get medical help immediately."
The entire roster of countries identified as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
